Ladies' 1s

Team Report 2007/2008 by Karen Hardie

The ladies’ 1s has had a successful start to the season, finishing fifth in the league table for the first half. Having lost five starting players at the end of last season, the remaining team were slightly apprehensive about what was to come. However as the first pre-season games approached several new players form Edinburgh University joined the club, helping to create a really solid 1s squad.

The team proved right from the start that they were capable of scoring goals – a key point! With goals coming from the strikers including Nicky B, Sam and Ruth, the midfielders Karen and Nicky A and even from the defenders Jane and Nesser!

This helped us to overcome teams such as Melrose (4-2), Merlins Gordonians (1-0), Highland (4-0) and Boroughmuir in the cup (4-1). The lapse of the season was in the final two games where we were beaten by Herriots 4-5 twice – gutted! But we cannot wait for a re-match!

The overall results included four losses, three draws and four wins, which is a promising start to the season. The girls will come back out for the second half of the season ready to challenge for the top finishing position.

The indoor season has gone very well indeed with Watsonians finishing in joint first position in National 2, with Bon Accord, Aberdeen – both on maximum points so far. Having the training facility at Mary Erskine has been a huge help to us in trying to make the switch between playing indoor and outdoor hockey. And many thanks to Dougie who gave us a few tips and tactics to start us off!

We have played four games so far and won them all, a record we intend to keep intact throughout the rest of the season. We have played Stirling Wanderers, Waverly Inveresk, Hillhead Ladies and Grange Edinburgh Ladies – who have recently come down from National league 1. Goal scorers include Karen (9), Ali (4), Paula (3), Nicky A (3), Jane (1) and Nesser 1 for and 1 against! A special mention must be made for Ali Neilson who has umpired all our indoor allocation of games so far. Thanks so much Ali!
