Ladies 1s Indoor Match Reports
Captain - Izzy Fung
Sunday 24th January
Perth
With 3 scheduled games to play the Ladies were not off to a good start as we were all very sluggish and tired looking. Despite a good fight in the 1st half of the game where Sammy was able to convert a penalty corner into a goal with a straight strike at the top of the D, we struggled to finish the game with the league leaders Waverley. 1-12 loss.
With no goalie in the squad, another volunteer stepped up for the 2nd game. After a quick goalie kit change, the team started off well. After learning our earlier lesson, we kept our shape and defended the inside channels much more efficiently making it hard for Hillhead to break freely on us. Pippa even managed to break away, and with a quick manoeuvre pass the goalie, scored her first goal of the day. Unfortunately this was not enough to hold off and eventually lost to Hillhead 1-4.
By the 3rd game, though we were all starting to fall asleep from waiting around in the heat of the hall at Bells, we were off to a flying start. Despite Kelburne's long spells of attacks, we managed to hold them off very effectively. With Waqa finding her true calling as a goalie by not only stopping a number of shots on goal, but a lot of those were from one on one breakaways with individual Kelburne players; Judi picking off and making vital tackles to stop free shots on goal; Ruth and Fiona working fantastically together by effectively channelling players defensively down the left side of the boards and stopping them from advancing into our D; Pippa managing to find again and again huge gaps and spaces in the Kelburne defence, and Sammy's uncanny knack for dribbling round players with what looks like ease, the final game was won 4-1. An all around excellent game by the whole team, with each player showing the determination and earning the well deserved victory. Congrats to Sammy & Pippa who each scored a hat trick of goals today.
