Positive results from the frozen north

After some deliberation at a distant committee meeting it was decided that the club would enter a second team into a regional indoor league. However, the committee hadn't foreseen that Edinburgh was in the same region as 3 Aberdeen teams who were all first teams with 1 sitting quite high in national 1 outdoor and a Dundee team.

The team accepted the inconvenience of 2 weekends in sunny Aberdeen and turned out for the first set of fixtures on Sunday the 7th of December in the main hall at Perth. A few members of the squad didn't allow the prospect of playing hockey the following day curtail the prior evenings enjoyment and the club Christmas meal. In hindsight this may have been a mistake, with 1 member of the squad dragged out of his bed at the pick up time(Mark M) and another member of the squad was AWOL(Craig M). We were rudely awakened by a fairly competent Granite City and with the hangovers not yet dispersed(it was only 10:55) we were defeated 9.7. Next up was Gordonians, we were optimistic things would go better here with the addition of the previously AWOL player who had made his own way to Perth, this was short lived as Gordonians found some form and dispatched us 11.5. This game will forever be remembered for a goal scored by G which amazed us all, he managed to lift the ball over the on rushing keeper on the move with his reverse stick, a feat never to be repeated again. Final game of the day was Aberdeen Grammar and we opened our points account with a convincing 9.3 win. Goals were scored by Daw(8), Miller(6), Wood(3), Johnston(2), Allen(1), McCrossan(1).

The next fixtures were up in Aberdeen. The team was disappointed to only pick up a point against Granite City with a late goal from the opposition making the score 7.7. Next up Harris 2s were put to the sword with a 9:2 win. Goals from McCurdy(5), Mundell(4), Johnston(3), McCrossan(2) and Robb (2).

We were also fortunate enough to have fixtures in Aberdeen on the 3rd of January. First up were Gordonians who appeared with a squad akin to an outdoor game. However, they lacked the experience of our hardy 6 who had an average age of 32. We played well and won 7.4 much to the frustration of Gordonians. Calum was in the wars in this game, not only did the boys from his former club in the distant past take exception to him but G also managed to accidentally pull a stick in a tug of war in the direction of Calum who remained calm throughout. The second game of the day was against Aberdeen Grammar where we ran out victors by 9.8. We were always in control of the game and an overtime goal from them made the score look closer than it really was. Goals from Miller(6), Dunlop(5), Mundell(4), Johnston(1)

Next up was the coaching hall in Perth where we defeated Harris 2s 7.3 but the 6 game run of not losing was to come to an end there. We lost 13.9 to Granite City and 11.8 to Gordonians. We were hampered by injuries in the later games with Thumper taking a ball off his big toe and G injuring his hand. This ended our slim chance at the title. Goals from Dunlop(8), McCrossan(6), Allen(6), Clements(3), Mundell(1).

The final weekend was at Glenrothes where we defeated both Aberdeen Grammar and Harris 2s for the third time of the season 8.6 and 8.2 with goals coming from Miller(7), McCartney(4), Mundell(3), McCrossan(2). A special game and was fairly hopeless in the second game once his hang over kicked in.

All things considered it was a successful foray into the regional league finishing a respectable 2nd.
