Our Ladies 1s have won the Quadruple!

Our Ladies 1s have won the Quadruple!

Sam Mallace26 May 2023 - 12:41

An incredible domestic season for our Ladies Premiership team

Our ladies 1s are champions of absolutely everything possible in Scotland this year. They have won ‘the quadruple’, which consists of 4 separate and well deserved wins.

The first of the year comes from indoor, winning at the Scottish Indoor Gala Day 5-4 against Clydesdale Western at Bells. This win secures them their first European Indoor fixture which will take place in February 2024.

The second win comes much later in the season, after the girls smashed the Scottish Premiership. This is the second year in a row that our ladies have won, and this year scoring a whopping 103 goals, with a 14/1/1 Win/Draw/Loss record. It’s no surprise here that Sarah Jamieson picked up the top goalscorer for yet again another year at our End of Season awards last week. Between Lucy Camlin and Ruby Crawford, only 14 goals were conceded in the Premiership which is insane. This secured them the bottom seeded spot in Europe in 2024.

The third comes from the Grand Finals, held at Glasgow green in April this year. This mini-tournament is a play-off format held over 2 days. The ladies beat Clydesdale comfortably on the Saturday with a 4-0 win, taking them into the Grand Final on Sunday. This was their first of 2 planned matches against Edinburgh University. A tense game led to a 2-1 win, gaining the ladies their third piece of silverware, and more importantly, securing them Scotlands top seeded spot in the EuroHockey Club Championship in 2024.

The fourth and final success comes from the Scottish Cup finals the week later, on May 7th. It was almost an identical game, held both at Glasgow Green and against Edinburgh University. Edinburgh turned up the heat from the previous weekend, ending in a 1-1 draw at full time. A penalty shootout followed. After 5 penalties each, it went to sudden death. Sarah Jamieson kicked off the second round, bagging a goal. Next up to shoot was Edinburgh University, where Lucy Camlin denied Jika Nyirenda her opportunity, and crowning Watsonians Ladies 1s Scottish Cup Champions for 2023.

Our Ladies have accomplished an incredible feat picking up all silverware available in the Scottish domestic season. Not only that, but have won the major titles (Premiership and Cup) back to back across two seasons.

The next challenge for our flagship team is the EuroHockey Club Challenge I in Alanya, Turkey this weekend after winning the Grand Finals last year. Their campaign has started off incredibly well with a 5-1 win against Catholic Institute (IRL), with goals coming from Sarah Jamieson x2, Susan Hamilton, and Emily Dark x2. You can find the schedule and keep up with their games here: https://eurohockey.altiusrt.com/competitions/311

The ladies would also like to share their fundraising link for the tournament to help with the financial burden that taking an entire team onto the European stage brings. You can find it below, and any and all donations would be massively appreciated.
