The Watsonian Hockey Club's Youth Section is delighted to announce some key appointments for next season.
Dan Coultas
Dan Coultas will be our Men’s Colts Head Coach and Boys’ Pathway Lead. As a former Great Britain international, Dan has played at the highest level; he scored 40 goals in his 77 Scottish appearances, and holds the Scottish record for the most goals scored (5) in an international match.
During his tenure as Watsonians Men’s 1st Team Coach, the team won their first ever Scottish Cup, had their highest league finish and first ever European qualification.
Dan also has 20 Senior Scotland Indoor caps, and he coached our U15 girls and boys last season when they won their respective East U15 Indoor titles. He also runs 1:1 coaching sessions at the Club, and hockey camps for youth players.
Tommy Orr
Tommy Orr has been appointed Head Coach for the Ladies' Colts 1's. This will be in addition to his roles in the senior club coaching the Ladies 2's and as Performance Secretary, which will now be extended to the Ladies Colts.
Tommy is a very experienced coach and has been a key member of the Watsonians Men’s 1st XI in their recent domestic and European successes. He is a current Scottish Men's international player and was an EY Irish Hockey League Winner.
Tommy also runs 1:1 coaching sessions for WHC youth players, specialising in shooting, reverse hitting, 3D elimination skills, and close control.
He will work closely with Mairi Shaw, who will continue to be the Girls' Pathway Lead and team coach for the Colts 1's.
David Sweetman
David Sweetman will take over from Keith Smith as Director of Youth Hockey. As a former Scottish Hockey CEO and international umpire, David brings a wealth of experience to our Youth programme. He is a highly respected member of the Scottish Hockey community.
David has 30-years’ loyal service at Watsonians as a player, umpire and coach, and was our 2025-26 Youth Coach of the Season. He will play an important leadership role in the ongoing development of our thriving Youth programme, with a key emphasis on coach development.
George Thornton, WHC Youth Convenor, commented, "I'm delighted that Dan and Tommy will be leading our Men's and Ladies' Colts' programmes next season, as we further strengthen our already excellent Youth coaching team. They will oversee the development of our young players, allowing them to progress at their own pace, while supporting our most talented players as they move through our pathway and helping them achieve their personal ambitions in hockey.
"I’m also thrilled that David Sweetman will be our new Director of Youth Hockey. His experience will be invaluable as we enhance our coaching programme and develop our future strategy. I'd also like to say a huge thank you to Keith Smith, who has been instrumental in the transformation of our Youth programme over the last 11 years. We wish him all the best for the future."
