Match report by Andrew LittleJohn

With Grange 5s and Dev teams not playing, the boys in maroon expected a strengthened Grange team as opponents. With Gray, Sholdis and Craig out called up to strengthen the 2s, you’d think that a weaker 3s team would be fielded. However, with the strength and depth of squad, captain Stewart had a healthy pot to chose from.

Playing a 3-5-2 formation, set the precedent from the beginning by the captain that attack was the aim of today. From the start the Watsonians pressed hard and high, putting early pressure on the Grange team. This allowed Littlejohn to capitalise with an early goal putting the boys in maroon ahead, 1-0.

Seizing the opportunity to put pressure on the Grange side lead to a series of short corners. A well executed straight strike by Hogarth (his speciality) thundered off the backboard, 2-0 Watsonians at the half.

Captain Stewart’s inspirational half time talk boosted the team’s confidence in him with words of inspiration and positivity, even Wright’s S&M bedroom antics were questioned. Perhaps not quite what was planned but the boys in maroon went into the 2nd half smiling and relaxed.

This approached must have been Stewart’s plan all along, with beautiful and poetic displays of hockey, Watsonians soon capitalising on a 3rd and 4th goal both from breakaway possession in their own D, firstly, by Struthers and secondly, by Duncan.

Not much worried the boys in maroon, only a small slip of concentration leading to a Grange goal. Ultimately, Watsonains mens 3s seeing out the game with a strong difficulty. However, some questions still go unanswered,

- What was the real reason for Wright’s bruise on his inner thigh?
- Will Allan ever return to the team, even after placing 2554th at the Great Scottish Run?
- Who came 2553rd and can we sign them?
- And, will the team ever make Hogarth happy that we looked for the “easy pass”?
