Following on from our early season good form, the 3rds found themselves sitting pretty at the top of East Division 1 with an opportunity to extend our unbeaten status against Stirling Uni 2’s who were currently rooted at the bottom of the table.
The team made a number of personnel changes from the previous week which vastly reduced the average weight of the team. Owing to a more lightweight and speedier outfit, Captain Rob opted for a changed formation for the day. A 4-3-3 formation was finally settled on and everyone agreed that with this more attacking formation goals were the order of the day.
And so it proved.
Our usual fast start resulted in a number of forays into the oppositions D, before a break down the right and along the baseline resulted in a ball to the back for pocket rocket Woody to tap in at the back post.
This opened the flood gates, and goals seemed to flow at regular intervals. In no particular order:
Goal 2 – mazy run by George Michael lookalike Cannon, leading to a sweet reverse into the bottom corner
Goal 3 – Rich Booth with a good dribble and shot to the corner
Goal 4 - Good work from Sweetman and Booth into the D and a reverse flick which was then tapped into the goal by Sweets
Goal 5 – Strong shot from Hogarth on the right hand side of the D into the bottom corner
Goal 6 – well worked short corner, using option 4 to allow Booth a good finish
And so the first half ended. Ever the perfectionists, the 3s then used the interval to dissect everything that could potentially be done better before realising that we were actually playing pretty well and if we continued as before there was potential for more goals.
And so it proved.
Goal 7 – strong front hit by Cannon into the middle of the goal.
Goal 8 – Booths hat-trick with another well worked penalty corner
Goal 9 – reverse stick tap in for Hogarth after a good pass from Greg (only recognised striker not to score)
Goal 10 – Cannon’s hat-trick, and much singing of Club Tropicana
So, a good afternoon's work from the 3s, strong in defence and deadly in front of goal. We’ve now got a good established squad of players across positions, which bodes well for the future.
DOD – Hogarth for falling over, badly
MOM – Rich Booth, a hat-trick and many assists
Many thanks to Conor Bond for umpiring
