Match Report by Murray Cannon

We started our 2nd game of the weekend on the new pitch at Peffermill against a youthful Edinburgh Uni team. Luckily they had only had the trials on Friday so it was the first time playing together.

The sun was shining and faces were sweaty but we battled on hard. We noticed that our half court press worked very well against them, they panicked a lot and we forced them to make many mistakes at the back. In the first half we got to a flying start with Greg Robertson scoring an incredible individual goal that put us in the lead.

The 2nd goal was scored by a storming run from LJ then passing to Greg then Sweetman who passed it on to the mighty Murray Cannon who volleyed it into the top netting. Great team goal! David Sweetman also bagged a goal of his own with a carefully placed push into the bottom corner. Edinburgh Uni got on the scoring board shortly after with a well worked team goal and some sloppy defending.

At the half time we were 3-1 up and talked more tactics and reiterated that the press was working and defenders should not dive in as much. However the general feedback was very positive.

We started the 2nd half very well by a good run by Murray and a fabulous fresh air of a reverse hit. Our attacking play was redeemed by a nice corner play, playing it back to injector Philip Long who swept it into the keepers pads which was rebounded into the top corner making it look spectacular. Moving on, another great miss from Murray Cannon.

We were brought down to earth by Andrew Littlejohn, brilliantly sending the keeper the wrong way in his penalty flick, however not so brilliantly forgetting to aim at the target. Another brilliant chance from Murray Cannon secured another missed reverse hit. Later on Phil tried to copy Murray with a volley of his own, however knocking it well over the crossbar in the process.

Rich Gray had to get another talking to from the umpire because of some of his over enthusiastic attempts at tackling. Our final goal was a good ball into the D by Chris Sholdis, finding Greg Robertson who eased it into the bottom corner. Some more chances in the second half lead to more reverse hits and no more goals. Being the second game of the weekend some of the older guys were getting a bit tired but still put in a good shift.

Overall the 3's portrayed an extraordinary performance over both matches at the weekend and should be proud of the way they played not only as individuals, but their contribution to the victorious team.
Congrats lads.
