Or is it halfs?

They say that power corrupts, and never was there more stark evidence of that than the captain deciding that he is in fact, after all, a striker. Howls of indignation and disbelief from the team as the information was disclosed. Then to add to the generally surreal environment (started, to be fair, by Phil “he does what he wants” Webb turning up on time), the captain lined up the hockey balls in a 4-3-3 formation and started pushing them around, seemingly at random, in what was apparently an attempt to impress upon the rather dazed onlookers what the desired shape of the team should be. Fraser “Whiteboard” Munro! Where were you when we needed you most??

So, to the action! Our boys moved the ball around nicely, and created a few half chances early on, but it was tough going to create any real space in the D against the doughty defending of the home team. Just when it seemed that frustration might set in though, up stepped David “not George” Thornton who guided it into the corner of the net from a short corner.

We continued to press, and got a lot of joy down the right hand side where Alexander “Raez” Raez was making great inroads and driving the baseline well. Another short followed, and after the initial shot was saved by the Keeper, Tony “Definitely a striker now” Allan collected the rebound and found a narrow gap at the near post to make it 2-0 just before the break.

Half time team talk called for more of the same, as the masterplan was being executed to something approaching a little bit better than not too bad. Plenty of width and movement had been called for and delivered and while more goals would have been ideal, the game seemed safe.

To the second half, and the game opened up a little, leaving more room for the marauding Raez to push forward from midfield, and indeed it was from his break that Allan scored his second. A great ball into the D, some anti-skill from the captain fooling the defence and keeper, and 3-0 was the result.

The final goal was the pick of the bunch as Grange had men committed forward but coughed up the ball which was released to Allan who nearly coughed up a lung in trying to burst forward before thinking better of the whole thing and feeding the ball to a remarkably advanced Webb. One touch was all it took to find Adam “Only recognised striker” Kinghorn, who took the defence and keeper out of the equation with a lovely pass to William “better than Ned” Stark who finished first time with the goal at his mercy.

And that was pretty much that.

MoM Raez.

DoD Allan for hat-trick avoidance.
