A tale of a tough test

After a warm up consisting entirely of a game of piggy-in-the-middle due to an entirely intentional decision by the captain not to bring the balls this week, our heroes embarked on round 2 of East 4 fixtures having completed the first set unbeaten. On the opening day of the season the day’s opposition had been dispensed with 6-0, but the team were mindful that Dev teams tend to improve as the season goes on – as evidenced by our own Colts.

And so it proved, as a much improved home team competed well from the off, and were unlucky to lose a couple of goals which might reasonably be described as falling into the scrappier category. We don’t mind that though, and neither does Adam Kinghorn who netted them both. In these types of games the ability to apply the finishing touch is often what makes the difference.

Inverleith pulled one back on the stroke of half time from a short corner, after a period of concerted pressure and we can’t have had too many complaints. No major changes were required at half-time, just a re-focussing on shape and organisation. With the home side looking dangerous, we decided the only way to make the game safe was to score more goals, not try to defend what we had.

The second half was slightly more comfortable although the home side always looked threatening on the break. Three more goals followed, two from Kinghorn (for the record, 4 goals = double hat-trick avoidance) and one from GK come defender come midfielder come forward Jamie Bridgefoot who finished expertly from 4 inches after great work by Ollie Deane to round the keeper and square the ball. Jamie now has 2 in 2 games from what is genuinely a combined distance of less than a foot. Deane had also laid on the 4th for Adam and his ball control and reach were a real handful for the defence throughout.

Inverleith had some great chances late on, and we were grateful to have already put the extra goals on the scoresheet to give the result a more comfortable look than it ever really felt during the game.

Special mentions in the MoM reckoning for Cameron Lambie and Iain Struthers who drove us forward from midfield, Michael Chan at the back and Ollie for his assists, but after a 4 goal performance it really had to be Adam Kinghorn.

DoD Allan, again, for ball-gate.
