Monday night saw Watsonians Ladies 4 travel to Tranent for an unusual Monday night, rescheduled fixture against Ross High. The team was a mixture of nerves and anticipation, following the previous and rather fraught meeting against the Tranent side earlier in the year.

After a gorgeous March spring day, we arrived looking forward to playing on a nice warm evening, however with the sun going down as we warmed up, we soon realised that winter was still lurking and the under armour came out once again…

A sobering pre match chat from captain Jodie and we set off, both sides playing agreeable hockey with neither team really standing out as the dominant side. After 10 minutes of backwards and forwards Julia travelled from the left into the D, passing to Olivia who slotted the ball passed the keeper, 1-0 to Watsonians. Ross High kept the pressure on, but the home team could not break down a solid defence from the team in maroon. A Ross High 16 was blocked by Carly and the ball was passed to Olivia who, with her trademark skills, beat Ross High’s last line of defence and the keeper once again, making it 2-0 to Watsonians.

With the first half coming to an end Ross High made a break, taking a shot on goal. A great save from Katie left her on the ground, allowing Ross High to lift the ball over her and into the net, seconds before the half time whistle went.

The second half saw a more defensive Watsonians, with great work from Tammy, Lynsey and Alida at the back who were continually tested by a Ross High team growing in confidence as the game wore on. Tension was beginning to rise as Ross High struggled to capitalise on their attack. Carly and Julia, in their defensive haste, were left dazed and confused after clashing into each other. A more light hearted moment saw Anna O receive her first ever card, with no idea what for, or indeed what the consequences were. Anna was very apologetic as she was ordered to leave the field. #Munro maintained good control of the game summoning the Ross High Captain to receive a warning for some supporters becoming a little too animated on the side line.

There was a sigh of relief from the Watsonian’s players and supporters when the final whistle went, still undefeated for the season with a 2-1 win. It was then that captain Jodie announced we’d won the league with 5 games to go!! Not wanting to jinx the game she secretly kept it to herself. Great way to start the week!

Thanks to our supporters Natale, Stuart, Alan and Judith for making the trip down.

A big thank you to #Munro for umpiring.
