Match report by Rozy Shepherd

Watsonians Ladies 4’s had their first match after the Christmas break against George Heriots 2’s at Tipperlinn on the 13th Jan. Although George Heriots had proved to be a tough match early in the season, everyone was in good spirits and looking forward to getting in to the game.

Both teams played solidly in the first half with shots on goals at both ends. After some great movement of the ball from the midfielders, and strong passes up the wing, our young'un darted round the defenders, pulled their goalie off line to score a very skilful first goal of the match! About 10 minutes later, some great passing between the forwards led to Alida following suit and scoring the second goal of the match – making it 2-0 to us. There was then a couple of short corners given to George Heriots before the half time whistle but their attempts could not get passed Katie’s great saving skills.

The start of the second half felt intense – they were passing the ball fast and strong and seemed very eager to get some goals. This meant a lot of work for the defenders and Katie and the midfielders dropped back a bit to help out. The match then got a bit intense and there was a bit of barging going on and so their umpire stepped in and asked everyone to calm down in an attempt to stop things getting too scrappy! More shots were fired on goals at both ends, and then what felt like for a solid 20 minutes George Heriots were keeping the ball in our quarter, eager to score a goal. They then had a few short corners, one of which was an excellent strike and goal – making the score 2-1. The last ten minutes of the match seems like a blur – we were all trying to hold on to what could potentially be a win and then the final whistle blew and it was over! We were all buzzing to have won, and really delighted to have a positive start to the second half of the season, especially since the first half had been a bit turbulent for us.

The Player of the Match was Ashley for her great work in midfield. I dread to think how much running the midfielders did in this game!

Thank you to Iain for umpiring!
