Match report by Suzanne Lello-Burke

The sort of rain that soaks to the bone was threatening to continue as the 4’s huddled on the sideline at Tipperlinn, old faces and newer gathering to face the top of the league Edinburgh University 6’s. Jodie was ready to run the bench, like a true manager she had her cushion, hot water bottle, and blanket to fend off the dreich weather. Pity she forgot the cocoa.

Thankfully the rain stopped, and after their usual slightly haphazard warm up the 4’s won the passback, and off they went. Fast passing play, end to end, relentless press from the Edinburgh Uni 6’s returned in equal measure by a sharp and confident ‘sonians 4s. A lucky break led to a quick goal for the Uni team. Watsons 4s could have easily dropped their heads but the opposite happened. Some unremitting darting and dribbling and generally making herself a menace by Holly meant that the 4s were able to gather momentum and drive forward against the Uni girls. She was clearly out to smash the fitbit challenge. Fast and furious play continued, and then a risky pass in the Uni defence allowed the cool, calm and collected Katie to pick the ball up top D and slot it past their keeps. Such composure, a joy to watch from the back. More of that against Cala please Katie!

The Uni girls managed to sneak another goal just before half time, meaning the first half ended 2-1.

Despite the lack of half time sustenance, the 4s started the first half with the same drive and determination. After some excellent pressure in the Uni half and some champagne hockey, Rebecca hit a beauty of a back stick that most of us can only dream of and evened the score. The Uni bench was getting frustrated, and noisy, and Watsons responded by taking the lead. With the sort of rebound play that makes you weep for joy, Julia tapped the ball in behind the keeper. It was all to play for now and the pace continued, Uni desperate to even things up. Unfortunately, they managed just that, and now the game was on. 3-3 with only minutes to go, Watsons were digging deep to try and hold the draw.

In literally the last few minutes of the math the Uni team managed to break from a short at their end and scored. The whistle blew and Watsonians couldn’t help feeling they had been robbed slightly of at least one point, but they can take pride in the fact that they took the team at the top of the league right to the edge and then some.

Thanks to David for umpiring and to new coach Ben for supporting!
