The Underdogs at it again

Instead of running laps around the school in a sorry attempt to warm up, we opted instead to stand by the sideline to watch the Mens 4s seal their victory and to cast our minds back to our earlier encounter with Preston Lodge a few months ago.

The one when on the Friday we had 8 players to field but no intention of conceding? The one when we miraculously fielded a team thanks to our casual (and semi-retired) players sacrificing their plans in true dedication to the cause and Mighty Ladies 4s? The one when in despite of this, we narrowly lost 1-0? Ah yes, that was the one!

Considering we had a full team and a couple of subs, we were already on to a winner but it wasn’t going to be an easy game. Preston Lodge were sitting pretty in the top half of the table and weren’t keen for being bumped down.

The game was fast and it was physical with pressure at both ends of the pitch. Despite a number of threatening breaks from Preston Lodge, the visitors just couldn’t find their way past the Sonians' defence and the first half ended 0-0.

At half time, it was agreed that we weren’t playing ‘our game’ and decided to shake ourselves together. It seemed to work as we began to control the game and to link our play better.

Time was ticking and a goal-less draw was looking likely but we weren’t resting on our laurels just yet. Having narrowly lost out on a point against top of the league, Edinburgh Uni 6s, the week before, we knew all too well just how quick things can change.

And there it was! A beauty of a reverse by Rebecca from the top of the D! Was it a shot or was it a cross? Either way, Jenny got the deflection and it hit the backboard with just seconds to go.

The whistle finally blew and we’d done it! Final score 1-0.
