Match report by Jodie Dunz

It was the darkest of days for the Ladies 4s. Forget rain clouds, think goal deluge, think 10 goals conceded in the last 2 games, yeah...sodden. Ladies 4s expected better of themselves and this was a chance to prove their worth against newly promoted Edi Uni 8’s.

‘Sonians were straight out the blocks and goal hunting from the whistle. Young guns Rowan and Heather linked up wonderfully in midfield to create several early opportunities, backed up by Rozy ‘blockade’ Shepherd in an elevated position upfield doing what she does best, breaking down opposition play and sending ‘sonians straight on the counter.

It wasn’t long before the maroons saw a return for their efforts, a great cross from Michelle found Hannah poised in space ready to shoot at goal, saved by the keeper Kate/Paul (unsure) was ready for the rebound 1-0.

Within minutes Michelle made it 2-0 and the Littlejohns on the sideline go wild! Having now fully awoken Jenny was in on the action including a sensational fizzer from the top of the D. Heather joined the party too reaping the rewards of some silky solo work along the baseline. The maroons went into the break 5-0 to the good.

High on life (and goals) the Ladies 4s didn’t even need to crack open the half time haribo to sweeten the taste of the first 35 mins. More of the same was the captain’s orders.

To the credit of Edi Uni 8’s, they came out fighting, wakey wakey Saskia! Special mention to summer signing Kate T for her calm and collected performance as sweeper. The defence were solid throughout with Catie and Lauren working hard to keep the clean sheet. Julia, Melissa and co kept busy in midfield and some sharp calls from Hannah meant the ball was picked up in space to allow the ladies in maroon to swarm the opposition D. Shout out to Julia also for her tracking back to help the defence, stirling effort.

The author, rather unjustly, earned ‘DoD’ by missing a sitter on the back post. Sincere apologies to Heather who had done all the hard work from the half way line, the plate was not quite big enough it seems. Can the author blame the psychological effects of hitting the post earlier or was it the fact she was compared to James Milner (ouch) on the sidelines?

Anyway back to the action, Michelle picked up a 2nd, Hannah opened her goal account for the season and the Wirral Wonder (Jenny) clinched it a hat-trick. Heather finished proceedings with a sensational strike from a short corner putting the fear of god into the Edi Uni 8’s keeper. The L4’s were flying...brace, brace! (Heather (2), Michelle (2) – see what I did there?).

The L4’s head into the international break off a 9-0 win, mojo rediscovered and a positive goal difference reclaimed. Sunnier skies indeed. A home game against tough opposition Liberton lies in store on the return, but we are ready.

The L4’s are delighted to see the new team members settling in so well, Kate T, Melissa, Hannah, Kate F and Imogen put in excellent performances and not forgetting our young stars Heather and Rowan. Credit to every single player on the pitch though and it’s a nice change not to be narrating several explosive/miraculous saves by Saskia!

Thanks to Fraser Sands for umpiring (minus your ‘what was that miss about on the back post Jodie’ comment)

MoM’s: Jenny Iredale, Rozy Shepherd and Kate Flanigan
