A braw Saturday comes round again after Burns night and L4’s was due to play Kingdom Home Carnegie Ladies 1’s team. After a tough game against them in September, when we were defeated in an almighty fashion, we were looking forward to the opportunity to redeem ourselves. With a near full squad and a plea by Captain Catie to arrive on time and start warming up pronto, we were all ready to tackle the day.
After a thorough warm up (during which Jude informed me she passed her 10,000 steps for the day, so I do mean a thorough warm up) we all felt ready for the game and took up our positions. Seconds before the umpires blew their whistles to start the game, there was a sudden downpour - it was impeccable timing and added to the charged atmosphere.
The game started and Carnegie pushed hard for the first 10 minutes and we were all trying to find our footing. Thanks to Kirstin’s strong organisational and shouting skills (very important for playing sweeper) the defence were on point and man-marking really well to close down any breaks by Carnegie. We then started to own our game more and kept our positions and focused on trying to use the width and switch the ball well which definitely improved as the game went on. The game felt fairly close for a while with the ball going between both sides of the pitch and lots of good passing by both teams. Our defenders and Saskia then saved a couple of Carnegie shorts in sophisticated style (i.e. Kate T sprinting to the attackers before they can take a shot) but shortly after, Carnegie came in to our D and with some neat passes, got passed our defenders and Saskia and scored a goal. It was 1-0 going in to half time.
Some oranges and jelly beans later (no haggis though that’s probs a good thing) we were ready to start the second half. Captain Catie’s as-ever motivational and tactical talk at half time made us all confident we were playing well and needed to do more of the same!
The second half started off with a couple of saved Carnegie shorts then a couple of shorts given to us, one of which Rowan put a beautiful, 99% guaranteed strike on the ball but it was saved by an incredible dive and save by Carnegie’s keeper. Nail biting stuff.
In the second half the midfielders worked hard helping defence a lot and then moving back up the pitch to pick up Kirstin’s super-charged free hits as well as working with the forwards in the D. It was so good to have 4 subs as it was a full on game and a lot of running involved so being able to sub was crucial! Carnegie were eager to get a goal, making quite a few shots on target only for them to be kicked/pounded away by Saskia’s great saves. No goals were scored in the second half, we held our own and the game finished 1-0 to Carnegie.
We all walked off the pitch with our heads held high knowing we’d played a good game especially compared to our away game against Carnegie in Dunfermline.
Thank you to Mairi Shaw for umpiring.
Player of the match was both Rowan Milligan and Saskia Braun.
