Peebles Ladies 1s - Who's Wearing Maroon Again?

With a rather good size crowd ready to support us, the 4s took to the pitch, although some more
hastily than others (looking at you Jenny!). Remembering that Peebles did not in fact have a keeper
when we made the trip there in the first half of the season, some were rather optimistic about the
potential result and the first 15 mins or so looked like we could repeat a win, with absolutely nothing
getting past our rock solid defence of Catie, Jen, Jena and the formidable Saskia in goal. With Captain
Mel leaving us for the snowy slopes in the second half, the midfield were putting in a fair old shift,
giving both the Peebles mids and our forwards alike a good run around! A golden opportunity struck
when a wonderful ball was thread through the Peebles defence to Liv, allowing a 1v1 chance with the
keeper. Unfortunately the keeper thought we were playing rugby rather than hockey, and with a
powerful tackle brought Liv down before the shot on open goal could be taken! Mild concussion
aside, Janey stepped up to the mark to take the rightly-awarded flick and coolly slotted it past the
keeper! However that great 1-0 feeling didn’t last long and just as half time approached, a short corner
for Peebles resulted in a goal on the stroke of half time.
 
Re-energised by words of wisdom and motivation (and sweets!) from departing captain Mel, the
mighty 4s retook to the pitch and put in another period of hard-fought attacking and defending.
Another goal that trickled in from Peebles won't be dwelled upon, but as Rozy put in a shift on the
wing, a wonderful ball was passed to Jenny at the edge of the D, then on into Liv and finally to Suze,
who's great touch at the back post brought the 4s back to a level playing field (or pitch!). 2-2 and
holding a fierce amount of pressure from some particularly skilled Peebles players, the 4s weren't
going down without a fight. However, even with more impressive running and pressure from the
midfields and forwards, it began to look like it wasn’t to be our day. Every shot in the D was being
returned and fired back down towards our goal and just as the game was wrapping up, once again
Peebles got a short corner, which in all fairness, was drag-flicked rather impressively into our net. 3-2
game, set, and match to Peebles. A defeat we didn’t really want, but in true Ladies 4s fashion our
heads are still high and still chasing that coveted 6th place table finish!
