Mistakes were made

Colts vs Borders Fjordhus Reivers 29th October

After two wins in our last two games, we knew that a strong borders side would be a new test for the Colts. They were sitting at the top of East 3 with a massive +16 goal difference. The borders side were out to impress, strutting their stuff and warming up down the whole length of the pitch. We weren’t fazed by this bravado and got about our yoga.

Having lost Dave Baring to school holidays and Iain McGillivary to long term injury, the Colts would be employing the services of Sandy ‘The Flair’ Hendry and for his second game for Watsonians, Doug Dyche. Along with Biffa and Zahid’s second game in the pads.

Just before the teams were due to take the field James Carrie stepped up and asked if he could have a game. In striking green shots and the claim he could play anywhere apart from defence he was welcomed aboard.

From the start borders looked the sharper side, pressing from the first whistle and giving us no time on the ball. With a number of mistakes we found ourselves three goals down with only 15 minutes played. Zahid had come close to most of the shots, but couldn’t keep them all from the net.

0-3

After the initial shock to the system the Colts started to get a bit of the ball and start playing some hockey. We had made some good moves down either flank though hard work and skill from Danny Tandon and Euan Burgess. With a flash of green (shorts) James would pick up the ball from Rory Evans and run at the Borders midfield, then their defence and finally their keeper. His first shot would be saved, but with a kind bounce his second would not. Smashing the ball into the roof of the net.

1-3

Boarders would take the wind out of our sales by scoring a fourth just before the half. Our half time team talk would ask for more concentration and try to cut out the silly mistakes that had been plaguing our game.

Borders would again capitalise on an early misplaced pass. 1-5 and a long way back. But it was a long half of hockey yet to play and we always like to get better as the game goes on.

After a number of unconverted PC’s we decided to return the ball straight to the injector. A solid push to the top of the D gave Biffa time to get his head up and return the ball the way it had come. Richard Waugh had an easy task to slap the ball into the unguarded goal.
2-5

We would press more, but to no avail. The second half had us playing a much better brand hockey. With us pressing the game in search of more goals we would leave ourselves open and concede one more.

A much better second half than the first, but we let ourselves down with the number of errors we made. A hard lesson, which I hope we all learned. Switched on from start to finish and be the first to the ball.

Thanks to Pete Gillespie for umpiring

Man of the Match- Richard Waugh (I think it was for more of a birthday vote than hockey performance)
