Maroons and Whites serve up a superb match at a chilly Tipperlinn

Report by Derek Brien, U16 Dev Manager
This afternoon saw something of a local derby at a bitterly cold Tipperlinn, with the Maroons and the Whites lining up against each other in a Division Two league match. We had a majority of Development Squad girls, a few girls from the B2’s and six girls from the S2 B squad to bolster numbers. Coach Dave Patterson picked what we hoped would be two evenly matched teams and off we went.
The first five minutes of the game were very even with some lovely passing moves, strong tackling and tracking back and good saves from both ‘keepers. The Maroons were awarded a short corner, but the Whites defended well and cleared the danger. Play ranged from end to end and in the 20th minute a lovely passing move down the right wing by the Whites ended with a flashing cross towards the penalty spot by Millie Hall and a desperate attempt to clear by one of the Maroons defenders saw her turn the ball past Emma and into her own net. 0-1 to the Whites. That was how the first half ended.
Team talks over and sweets shared round, the second half got under way and within five minutes of the restart the Whites found themselves two ahead, courtesy of ANOTHER own goal!! Emma made a fantastic initial save from a great shot by Millie Hall, but the ball squirrelled up and rebounded off an unfortunate defenders leg, to creep agonisingly across the goal line before it was cleared. 0-2 to the Whites. Five minutes later the Whites were three ahead after the predatory Millie Hall pounced to stroke the ball home after an almighty goalmouth scramble. A kind of unofficial Millie Hall hat-trick? 0-3.
At the other end the Maroons were awarded a penalty flick after some jiggery-pokery in the D and Ellen Robertson struck the ball confidently past Sasha. 1-3.
The final whistle blew, but not before some last minute drama with the Maroons being awarded a short corner seconds beforehand. The Whites defended well, but the ball struck a foot and another short corner was awarded. Ellen wound up for the shot after Ellie’s injection, but Whites defender Bea Raitt beat the ball away and it was all over.
Huge thanks to Coach Dave Patterson and to Umpires Craig Yelland and George Thornton.
Thanks also to the players for making it such a great game to watch - Emilia Henry, Anneliese Higgins, Rebecca McAlpine, joint Maroons Players of the Match Ellen and Morven Robertson, Anna Simpson, Kirsty Diamond, Megan Dunlop, Imogen Forbes, Yazi Murray, Abbie Fairbairn, Ellie Hall, Cara Buttery, Ailsa Gibb, Anna Morrison, Emma Brien, Lucy Topley and Cara Johnston.
