Sonians felled by clinincal Western.

Sonians crossed the East-West divide for the third successive weekend to face Western Wildcats at Auchenhowie. The visitors began brightly, pressuring well and with high intensity. Early forays looked dangerous, with Chris Henry’s pace causing particular problems for the Western defence. Despite this Sonians were unable to forge any clear cut opportunities; let down by the quality of the final ball. In contrast Western’s finishing proved clinical as a threatening run down the right baseline was capitalised upon at the back post. One soon became two when poor marking afforded too much room to a Western forward, who duly obliged with a smart finish.

The early exchanges of the second half followed in much the same vein as the first: Sonians continued to enjoy good territory but did little to threaten the scoreboard, whilst Western’s forward line looked dangerous. As the half dragged on, tiredness from both sides began to take effect and the match opened up. Western made it three after a weak clearance from the top of the Watsonians D provided a clear run through on goal. A fourth followed shortly when the Watsonians midfield were slower to react to than their counterparts to some more weak Sonians defending. A late short corner was converted well by Fraser Sands but it proved little consolation. Yet again Watsonians walked away from a tight game with the scoreboard seemingly reflecting a comfortable victory for the opposition; the value of defensive concentration and clinical finishing highlighted in brutal fashion.
