Wet away days

Mens 1s had the rare privilege of competitive hockey on Easter weekend thanks to a re arranged fixture from earlier in the season. The prior game against Greenock was postponed previously due to flooded roads. There was concern amongst the team on route that canoes may be required as the torrential rain had made the journey to Largs more long winded than usual. They were pleasantly surprised to arrive at the pitch and for it to be playable.

The squad was missing a few regular players. Butler had the cheek to choose to attend his wedding as opposed to a crucial must win game. With the changing room formalities out of the way(rubbish tunes, Swan taking days to get changed and team talk) the boys headed out to the west coast rain. The warm up was rather wet and cold but the boys were ready.

The match started in a similar fashion to as it would continue with Watsonians dominating possession and moving Greenock around. The boys in Maroon were ahead within 5 minutes through McCrossan. A second goal came shortly after with a reverse strike from McCurdy. However it wasn’t all one way traffic and the away team were punished after turning the ball over too many times in the middle of the pitch. They were reminded to stay focussed with a Greenock goal to make it 2.1. The third goal came about 10 minutes before half time thanks to a good move down the right from Swarbrick, McCurdy and McKenna. 2 minutes before half time Watsonians scored a 4th thanks to Brown.

Sonians continued to dominate in the second half but squandered numerous chances. 2 more goals were added with Sands rounding the keeper and McCrossan grabbing a second goal.

3 points in the bag, now the focus(with the exception of a few beers to celebrate Butler getting married) was all on the final match against Granite City on Wednesday evening. 3 points would secure automatic promotion but any other result would hand the title to Inverleith.
