Water based indeed.

National 2 – Game 2 – September 16th vs Stepps (A)

Week two in the league for ‘Sonians saw them face Stepps at the thoroughly drenched pitches at the National Hockey Centre. It was no surprise that, just our luck, it was raining for most of the game. For some reason one of the experienced hockey players either in the Stepps camp or the Sonians squad asked for additional water to be added to the already sodden pitch, resulting in Hollis and Beachy having a legitimate excuse for slow ball pace… for once. The Sonians boys got off to a flying start as one magnificent piece of play saw the boys from Edinburgh getting the first goal, young Roddy was in the right place to put it in the goal. Two in two games for ‘Hot Rod’. The remainder of the first half left Watsonian’s with plenty of possession but lacking bite in the opposition D, a recurring theme from last season. Furthermore, the Watson’s lads were completely stumped by the Stepps half court policy after spending much of last year deploying that very tactic themselves.
For large periods of the remaining game Sonians were in a controlling position moving the ball well and looking threatening going forward. Searching for that elusive goal that would bring a bit of comfort to the ever tightening sphincter of captain Swarbrick…
In the dying minutes with the score still (somehow) 1 – 0 the Stepps faithful saw their chance. The two old guys sat in the ‘Stepps End’ started making their voices heard with cries like: ‘go on Stepps’ and ‘hit that dobber’ (they still don’t like Will Butler very much…) The added pressure from their twelfth man and a rare stumble at the back from Beachy meant that the men in black had an opportunity to get a shot off but it was no bother for our ridiculous muscular goal keeper Luke Campbell. In summary; a solid performance from the boys, but still plenty to work on in their quest to get back up to National One.
MOM – Ben Allen and Luke Campbell
DOD – Jack Kinloch: Subbing himself off during an attacking corner. Swearing offensively at a family restaurant.
