Ladies 1's see first win of the season

Having struggled to pick up any points this season, the ladies 1's faced second bottom team GHK away at Glasgow Green on Saturday. For the girls, this was a match that we had to pick up points from. GHK were above us on points but not goal difference, so we knew that a win would put us above them. A nervous start to the game saw a few silly mistakes and Watsonians gave away several short corners. Unfortunately, it wasn't long till GHK punished us from one, with a scrappy goal in the right hand corner. This was to be the turning point in the game. We were either going to buckle under the pressure or trust in the process and get a goal back. Thankfully, we pressed hard, put GHK under pressure and after some lovely attacking play down the left from Olivia McMahon, she reverse sweeped the ball into the D and Heather Elder was able to get a nice deflection, firing the ball into the goal. The girls dominated for the remainder of the first half and we were focused and determined to keep pushing in the second half. Some silky skills from Kirsty Hill allowed her to dodge several players and smash it into the D, giving Olivia McMahon an easy front stick sweep into the goal, 2-1. GHK responded straight away by dribbling fast into our 25 and gaining a penalty corner. Thankfully, our defensive corner team ran out hard and stopped them scoring. The third and last goal of the game came from a well timed interception by striker Heather Elder who then had a free line to goal. She only had the goalkeeper to beat and decided to take it round the goalie who took her out, giving us a penalty flick. A composed finish into the bottom right hand corner by Scottish Internationalist Emily Newlands gave us a comfortable win, ending the game in 3-1. We now look forward to an important double header weekend against Kelburne and the leagues newest members ESM.
