Watsonians Vs ESM

The second game of the weekend saw Watsonians ladies compete against 8th place, Division 1 newcomers ESM. Having narrowly lost yesterday to Kelburne, the girls knew the importance of gaining 3 points from the Edinburgh side to help us close the gap between 7th and 8th place. Watsonians went out hard and passed the ball well in the transfer. A lot of good leading by the forwards and early balls down the line from the defence and midfield caused difficulty for ESM's defence. It wasn't long before a hard ball into D saw some good control from Heather Elder to knock it on for Captain Nikki Stobie to push the ball in between the goalkeepers legs, 1-0. We continued to put pressure on but after several attempts at smashing the ball into the D, ESM got the equaliser. ESM have been known for their quick attacks but Scotland International Emily Newlands' quick pace kept things steady at the back. At the end of the second half the score stayed at 1-1. Going into the second half, we kept passing the ball well and finding gaps in the middle. Having not received a penalty flick from a foot on the line save, we did receive one later on in the second half but a good save from the goalkeeper saw it stay at 1-1. Having had a lot of penalty corners throughout the match, ESM defended well and prevented it being a much higher scoring game for us. Finally, at 15 minutes a well worked goal saw Katie MacCallum score a powerful reverse making it 2-1. ESM fought hard for the remainder of the match giving us a few frights but another fast attack saw us steal the ball and after some lovely passing and a square ball to top D, this allowed Katie MacCallum to smash the goal into the top left hand corner making it 3-1 with 3 minutes to go. We had another fast attack by Kirsty Hill in the last minute but another good save by the goalie saw the game end 3-1. The girls earned a well deserved 3 points and we look forward to a tough game next Saturday against second in the league Grove.
