Tough Day for the Ladies 1s

The ladies 1s were back on home turf on Saturday hoping to put the Hillhead disappointment behind them. The girls weren’t in for an easy match however, welcoming the Wanderers girls from Dundee. The day seemed to get off to a slow start with Coach Smith forgetting to bring the bag of balls from his car to the pitch. That slow start continued as the game commenced with the ball ending up in the back of our goal within two minutes, putting Wanderers 1-0 up. Watsonians began to get into the game with good pressure and possession but couldn’t quite find the finishing touch. A counter attack from the opposition and some leaking defending, gifted Wanderers their second goal of the game. Again, the ladies found themselves on an upward battle trying to bring themselves back into the game but after some classy skills by the opposition forwards another goal dribbled past our goal line. It was safe to say the ladies were glad to see the half time whistle to re-group for the second half. A flying start to the second half saw Watsonians gain a penalty corner, but couldn’t not find the back of the net. Watsonians continue in their stride applying good pressure and creating plenty attacking plays. It seemed to be lack of concentration on the line to goal that gave Wanderers a deflection for their fourth goal of the game. With positivity on the low, the Watsonian ladies found some strength to pull one goal back through a cross into the circle for Nikki Stobie to put the ball over the line. Attacking play from both teams opened the game up with Wanderers being clinical once again in front of goal, making it 5-1. In the final 10 minutes of the game, Watsonians picked up the tempo putting the Wanderer ladies under pressure at the back. Eventually, an opening came allowing Heather Tait to score, giving Watsonians their second goal of the game. The game was far from over when Eve Pearson won the ball high up the pitch, running the baseline and forcing a save from the Wanderers keeper. Fortunately, the rebound landed perfectly for Bethan Mann scoring the third for Watsonians. However, time wasn’t on our side the game ended 5-3 to Dundee Wanderers. Not an easy day at the office for the Ladies 1s but a positive performance in some areas of the pitch. With Grange and Kelburne in the last two game of this half of the season the ladies will be looking to finish on a high with two wins.
