Ladies 1s vs Grange

First Round of the Cup

After a tough game on the Friday night the girls had to re-group for their first round cup game against Grange. After an untraditional pre match team talk at Anna Cameron’s flat, the girls arrived at Fettes ready to go. Straight from passback we showed Grange that they were in for a tough game. The persistent pressure forced Grange to make errors, allowing Watsonians to create some good chances. Grange proving hard to break down we finally got the break through from Heather Tait to make the game 1-0. Getting the goal settles nerves as we continued to dominate. Grange always looked dangerous on the counter attack when Watsonians turned the ball over but some calm defending ensured the threat was covered. Once again struggling to breakdown a stuffy defence, a second goal finally came through with Heather Elder. Half time was a well-deserved break for the team after dominating play. We went in to the second half looking for the same performance. Again, Grange tight man to man marking was proving hard to break down. It was going to need something special to break them down. The grange keeper making some cracking saves to keep the ball out the goal, a third chance came our way with Heather Tait once again converting to go 3-0 up. It became harder as we started to tire and grange had all 11 players sat back within their 25 to prevent us from getting into the circle. With great linking play and transfers around the back a penalty corner was won. Keeping the corner simple Emily Newlands got the 4th goal firing the ball home into the bottom left corner. The game wasn’t over then. Grange finding a way out of our press and catching us on the counter gained a penalty corner. Keeping the corner simple, a straight strike from their captain found the ball in the back of the goal. The game finished 4-1 and the ladies march in to the next round of the cup.
