National League Playoffs

The Men's and Women's National League Division 1 and 2 fixtures have now finished. SHU have introduced a new format to the leagues which alters the way teams move up and down leagues at the end of the season. Teams finishing in the top 4 positions in Division 1 will automatically play in Division 1; the lower 6 teams and the top two teams in Division 2 will be play in 2 seeded pools, only the top two teams in each pool will automatically play in Division 1. Teams finishing in 3rd or 4th place in the pool competition will play against each other, only the winners will play in Division 1, the losers will play in Division 2.

As runners up in Division 2 our Men's 1st XI have been put in Pool A and will play against Edinburgh University (Sat 22nd Mar 10.30 am Forthbank, Stirling), Grove Menzieshill (Sun 23rd 11.30am Peffermill) and AAM Gordonians (Sun 29th 3.30pm Glasgow Green). Teams finishing in 3rd or 4th place will play on Sunday 30th at Glasgow Green in a final effort to secure their position in Division 1 for 2014/15.

The same seeded pool structure is being used for the ladies competition. Our ladies 1st XI finished in 7th place and have been placed in Pool B. They will play against Cala (Sat 22nd Mar 1.30pm Glasgow Green), Grange (Sun 23rd Glasgow Green), and Hillend (Sat 29 10.30 am Forthbank) As with the Men's competition only the top two teams in the pool secure automatic places in Division 1, the deciding games will be played on Sunday 30th March at Glasgow Green.

We wish both teams good luck.

Mens 3s vs 4s

On a cold February day, Tipperlinn hosted an epic battle between the Watsonians Men's 3rd & 4th XI. Both teams came into the game desperate for points. The 3s wanting to keep up their momentum at the top of the table, the 4s looking for anything to help them as they scrap it out at the bottom of East Division 2. Therefore both teams were massively fired up for the game and even the elements provided an epic setting with both teams lining up in a mixture of sleet, hail and rain as the game got underway.

The 4s started strongly, keeping the ball well and putting pressure on the 3s to begin with, but midway into the first half, the 3rd XI started getting more possession and hitting on the counter, which led to a first short corner that was deflected in at the near post by Jimmy Symonds to give the 3s a 1-0 lead. From there, the team in maroon continued to pressurise the 4s goal which led to a second deflected in by a 4s defender from a Richard Booth cross and then a third soon after as Sandy "#FlairGoalsOnly" Hendry finished off a wonderful move with a diving reverse stick finish from a yard out. The 4s managed to claw one back after Dave Munn was allowed too much time to break and run at the 3rd's defence, winning himself a penalty flick which he cooly converted. However, the last action of the first half was another 3s corner which Symonds converted with a cheeky finish through his own legs to make it 4-1.

In the second half, both teams came out full of energy and looking to strike first, but it was the 3s who managed to clinch the crucial goal with Symonds sealing his hat-trick before 3s captain Duncan Bell silenced his season-long critics and the opposition with a stunning straight strike into the bottom corner past the flailing keeper Gillespie from a short corner. The 4s though continued to fight on and clawed back some of the deficit through their own hat-trick hero Dave Munn who again sliced through the 3s defence to bag two more goals and bring the scoreline to 6-3.

So the 3rd XI claimed the points in what was a thrilling and exciting derby day clash played in a great atmosphere and was an excellent showcase for for the Men's side of the club. And of course led to some great banter in the clubhouse afterwards!

10-man triumph for ladies 3s

10-man triumph for ladies 3s - the ladies 3s returned from the Christmas break in style on Saturday with a convincing win over rivals Carnegie... despite being a man down! On a week when none of the ladies club keepers were available, Kirsty Archibald stepped into the kit and succeeded in keeping a clean sheet. The 'sonians girls defied all the odds to remain composed and dominate the match throughout, with Barbara Rowe repeatedly out-manoeuvring the opposition to earn herself the woman of the match title. Having netted two in the first half, super-striker Sammy Stewart completed her hatrick early into the second in order to seal the fate of the Dunfermline side. Fantastic game and a huge achievement for all who played! Well done ladies :D

To top this off, Fraser McCurdy has been selected as manager to the U21s!

A mixed start to the season ...

A successful day for the boys...Men's 1s continued their Division 2 title campaign with a convincing 6-1 win over local rivals CALA and the 2nd XI defeated ESM 4-1 at Tipperlinn. Tougher times for the girls, the Ladies 1s experienced a baptism of fire into Division 1 hockey, suffering a 10-0 defeat away to last season's unbeaten Division 1 champions Grove whilst the Ladies 2s were on the wrong side of a closely contested 2-1 defeat away to Grange 2s.

'Old boys' enjoy 10 year reunion

The Club's Scottish Plate-winning 3rd X1 from 2003 celebrated their 10 year reunion on 31 August with a match against the current 4th X1 at the new Tipperlinn pitch.

It was just like the old days - captain Biffa's inspirational team talks, Rennie's bad jokes, Cavi's illegal tackles, Smithie's banter, Russell's silky skills, Gussie and Paul terrorising defences, George moaning at umpires and post-match beers at Myreside.  The only difference was that the team were even slower than before ... and there's now Sky Sports in the clubhouse!

In a very evenly-matched game, the 'old boys' won 1-0 with a 'volley' from Dan Parkin which surprised goalie Rich Miller. Both goalies (Rich and Antoine) had great games, as defences were on top.  Many thanks to umpires Stuart and Sue for contributing to a very enjoyable day.  See you in 2023 for our 20th reunion, guys!

New players wanted!

Watsonians are keen to recruit new players (male and female) of all abilities.

Our Ladies 1st XI have been promoted into National Division 1 and are looking to strengthen their squad. New Ladies players should contact Naomi Allum ( in the first instance.

On the men's side, the 1st XI are looking for players to aid this season's promotion challenge. New players should contact Alasdair Swan at

Players of all ability are of course welcome - we have four men's and women's teams playing at different various levels of Scottish hockey, meaning that if you're an experienced player or are just looking to get into a new sport, Watsonians may be the club for you.

We are a club with a great social side, a new pitch being installed for this season, and we remain the most value-for-money hockey club in Edinburgh - come and join us!

New incentives for umpires

From the 2013/14 season, Watsonians will now offer a new incentive package to those who umpire club fixtures.

Members who now umpire club matches will now be due £10 per match umpired, replacing the previous voucher system. The existing incentive package for umpiring National League fixtures remains unchanged.

Our games couldn't happen without umpires' dedication and commitment, and umpiring is also a great way to get to know people across the club and get more involved in hockey. It is hoped that the new scheme will encourage many more players to take up the whistle!

'Sonians help Scotland U18s to EuroHockey promotion

Watsonians players have played key roles in Scotland U18’s successful EuroHockey Championship II tournament.

Scotland finished second in the competition, losing the final 2-0 to Spain, but the result means that they will be promoted to the EuroHockey U18 Championship in 2015.

In a crucial 3-2 win over Ukraine that secured Scotland’s place in the final, Watsonians’ Waverley Miller scored an important equaliser before her fellow ‘Sonian Claire Hill notched the winner from the penalty spot.

Waverley also scored in a 4-0 win over Italy earlier in the tournament, marking a successful trip for the two Watsonians involved.
