Watsonians Men’s 1st XI vs Granite City - Match Preview

Season preparations began eight months ago with one target in mind for Watsons Men’s 1s – straight promotion to National 1 avoiding the difficult play-off games. After an eight week preseason with twelve matches spanning as far as Essex and topped with a Bartholomew-Fraser-Harris wedding the season got underway.

The first match was one of three banana skins along the way for the squad, and one which would prove hazardous again. Both fixtures against Falkirk left the teams leaving with a point a piece. The third stumbling block in the clean sweep of a season came against local and league rivals Inverleith. On the first encounter Watsons were 4-0 up at halftime seeing out the match at 4-2. The home fixture unfortunately didn’t run in the same vein and cost Watsons their first defeat of the season 0-2.

This has left Watsonians sitting second top of the league with one point separating them from their local rivals. However, with Inverleith’s season closed Sonians have one final game in hand to decide the outcome of season.

Wednesday 30th March, DISC 7.15pm sees a rearranged fixture against Granite City. Snow first time around plus little time left to fit in fixtures has seen the teams arrange this midweek and midway in Dundee. With three games remaining for Granite City, a single point from any of these will secure them a third place finish above St Andrew’s Uni. For Watsons the job demands only one outcome – a win. Anything less will see them finish second to Inverleith and will put them into the play-offs against Clydesdale who have finished seventh in National 1.

The young Watsonians 1st XI squad who average out at 24 will know the outcome of their league campaign and last eight months of hard work by tomorrow evening. All going well, we will be in Ox184 from 9.30pm for anyone who would like to drop by for a midweek beverage.
